This year we had the opportunity to shoot four videos for the 2019 Berkeley Visionary Awards held at Freight and Salvage Theatre in downtown Berkeley with approximately 200 people attending. Each video showcases a growing startup company based in Berkeley that has created a unique, game-changing business model that is changing the market place. These visionaries brought to light new ways of solving problems that were exceptionally creative and innovative.

Magoosh is an online platform that helps students prep for major university level exams such as the SAT, LSAT or the GMAT. The founder, Bhavin Parikh, felt that test preparation is generally boring, difficult and challenging, particularly if you don’t have help. He wanted to transform the process and make it accessible to everyone through an engaging online experience.

Medinas Health – Changing the Quality of Healthcare
Chloe Alpert was motivated by spending time in hospitals because of a family member’s illness. She observed that there’s so much waste in hospital operations and this prompted her to create Medinas Health. This unique company monitors and tracks equipment and their usage in hospitals, from MRI machines to defibrillators. It also helps medical facilities resell their used equipment, all using a unique online platform that Medinas created. They now have clients throughout the United States and globally.

Jason Haight is the president of GIG Carshare, created by the American Automobile Association as an innovative startup to address the new world of car share. AAA realized that fewer Millennials and other younger drivers were purchasing cars. To reach these non-car owners AAA created a fleet of Prius Cs that can be accessed through a simple app. Once you join GIG you just look for a car nearby, unlock the vehicle and go. You only pay for the time you are using it. They cover San Francisco, Oakland and the East Bay and have now expanded to Sacramento with an all-electric fleet of Chevy Bolts.

The award acknowledges Wareham’s commitment to creating and nurturing a unique environment for companies developing innovative science and technology focusing on unique solutions to many of our global problems. The short video created by RadiantBrands highlights some of their unique tenants.
The Visionary Awards attract and foster unique startups in Berkeley. And, like these award winners, these businesses help create new approaches to solving global problems and continue to foster and attract innovation to Berkeley globally.
